Our Top Ten Outdoor Activity Ideas for October Half-Term

Half-term is a great time to get outdoors with your family before winter really sets in. We've put together our top ten outdoor activity ideas to inspire some autumn fun!

1. Wildlife walks

Get back to nature and record what you see! Discover a world of hidden creatures on a wildlife walk - it makes a scenic walk more interesting and you'll be helping the environment too. By noting down the different species and habitats you discover, you'll be doing your bit for local wildlife conservation and helping your children learn more about the natural world in the process. Find out more on the Wildlife Trust's website.

2. Geocaching

If you find it hard to prise your family away from their mobiles, geocaching can help get the digital generation outdoors and active with a treasure hunt for techies! It makes being outdoors a true adventure as you search for hidden treasures using a GPS-enabled device and discover some beautiful places along the way. Geocaching coordinates can be downloaded from the geocaching website.

3. Family fun run

Couch potatoes can find a new enthusiasm for staying active when it's channelled into a fun run! There's sure to be a 5k charity race near you and it's a great way for families to train together, challenge themselves and have fun as part of a team. A lot of race organisers provide goody bags and medals, so you get something to take home as a memento of the day. Find a fun run near you.

4. A scenic river paddle

You might need a few more layers and be prepared to get wet! Autumn is a fantastic time of year to experience canoeing - the trees changing colour bring the most stunning river views and there are less midges and flies than in summer. It can be a relaxing and rewarding day out for the whole family - don't forget to pack the sandwiches for a spot of lunch on the riverside! Search for a canoe trip to suit you.

5. Seashore safari

A trip to the seaside is always high on the list for a fun, family day out. In the autumn, it's usually not swimming or sunbathing weather but this also means there are fewer crowds, so it's a great time of year to enjoy connecting with nature. Exploring the tideline and rock pools will keep everyone entertained for hours! The Marine Conservation Society provides a printable guide for some fun beach activities to try with the family.

6. Shoot some clays!

Get the kids away from the Xbox and put that target practice to good use out in the fresh air. Clay pigeon shooting often brings out the competitive side in many families! It's lots of fun and a chance to try something a little bit different in a rural setting. Great for kids over 12. Discover your nearest venue.

7. Go climbing

Outdoor climbing can often start a lifelong passion for the sport and a love of exploring the variety of natural landscapes around the UK and beyond. It not only builds technical skill, strength and agility but also trust and confidence. Families can enjoy 'learning the ropes' together and there are many locations throughout the UK that offer family-friendly courses for a fun day out that will certainly help burn off any excess energy! Find out more on the Kids Climbing website.

8. Dinghy sailing

Get out on the water and experience the gentle sunshine and great sailing conditions that autumn brings. Learning to sail is a fantastic day out for families with older kids. Many sailing clubs offer programmes for beginners so there's no need to worry if it's your first time. There will probably be other families learning as well so it's a great way to make new friends as you test your skills on the water! The RYA provides a useful guide on local sailing club locations.
