May 28th to June 5th is National Go Canoeing Week - why don't you 'Join the Journey'?
PGL's story began with one man and a canoe when Peter Gordon Lawrence embarked on his first canoeing holiday down the River Danube in 1955.
He was so inspired by the experience that in 1957 he started leading similar canoe trips along the River Wye. A different stretch of the river was tackled each day, making camp under the stars on the riverbank every night and striking camp in the morning to paddle onwards. Peter called this new venture 'PGL Voyages' and over a 50 year period, it has grown into the company known today as PGL Travel Ltd.
PGL now offers a wide range of land and water based activities but canoeing is still close to our hearts and many thousands of guests try the sport for the first time when they stay at a PGL centre.
The canoe sessions that form part of a PGL multi-activity course in the UK are a great introduction. Sessions take place on our on-site lakes and rivers and even on the sea at our coastal centres which give the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful locations from a whole new perspective.
Groups looking for more of a challenge can arrange to undertake their British Canoeing Paddle Power Awards during their stay at any of our UK centres where canoeing is offered. For groups looking to advance further with the Paddle Power Passport or Discover Awards, PGL Tregoyd in Powys offers canoeing on the diverse and challenging water of the River Wye. Those looking for adventure further afield can undertake and progress in the same awards at PGL Domaine de Segries and PGL Lou Valagran during a breathtaking three day descent of the Ardèche River in France.
Whether you're a beginner or a more experienced paddler, canoeing has lots to offer. Not least the opportunity to experience the extraordinary variety of wildlife that can be found in and around the water. For many, the first time they try canoeing is not only an introduction to paddlesports but also the start of a lifetime love.
During 'National Go Canoeing Week', British Canoeing are encouraging everyone to grab a paddle and either try canoeing for the first time or challenge themselves to paddle further than they have paddled before. There are lots of events and activities taking place across the UK suitable for everyone from complete beginners to pro-paddlers, plus an opportunity to log any 'canoe miles' you paddle during the week in order to help reach the 30,000 mile target.
