Bethan Forrow
Canoe Slalom
'Although canoeing is an individual sport, there is a canoeing family that it is great to be part of'
Background
In July 2013 British Canoeing visited Bethan's school as part of their talent identification programme. They tested over 1500 children in the area and Bethan was one of only 15 selected to take part in training as part of the Olympic legacy programme.
Training
Bethan is fortunate to live close to the Olympic 2012 White Water Centre where she trains nine times a week. Her school has been very supportive, enabling her to take part in some training sessions during school time and she also has a tutor who helps her catch up with the lessons she misses, although she finds it requires a lot of discipline to make time to keep on top of her schoolwork.
As well as training sessions during the week, Bethan also has national training camps every other weekend and her training includes sessions on the water, technical workshops and time in the gym.
Future Goals
Looking to the year ahead, Bethan hopes to retain her place on the English National Talent Squad, as well as gaining a place on the Junior GB team in order to represent her country again. She would like to improve her national rankings throughout the year, as well as competing in selections for the senior team in April.
